Companion Clara
You came here on a maple leaf
To float into this land.
You looked outside your window,
And there you saw a man:
Little coat and little smile,
A bow tie on his breast.
You ran away; don't look away:
The weary have no rest.

Song of the Companions
There's a long list of people
Who've come and who've gone:
Companions can never stay;
They have to move on.
Some, they are left behind,
And some choose to go,
And some, I am sad to say,
Die on the road.
But don't travel all alone
Throughout space and time;
You need to have company
To help keep your mind.
Travel too long alone,
And soon you'll become
The very thing you fought against
For so very long.

why do i reread old messages
scratching at old scabs until they bleed
anew, keeping the hurt
the anger the indignation fresh?
why do i go places
i know will cause the burning
rage in my gut, bile in my throat
the "i'm betters" and "told you so's"?
why do we think to find peace
while always looking to be offended?

It's Never Too Late
Every now and then, something happens to make me glad I'm a librarian:
An older gentleman walks in
looking for a book of poems by Helen Steiner Rice.
His skin is weathered brown and he wears a checked red jacket.
The look makes me think of farms
and years spent tilling the earth.
In his rough, husked voice,
he says he needs to read a poem at church,
and she is the only poet he knows of.
We don't have any copies here, but
I direct him to our nonfiction section
with 100 Essential American Poems edited by Leslie M. Pockell,
in the hopes that he would find another poem
to his liking.

I go back to my desk.
A few minutes later,
he comes up to the desk,
book in hand and tears in his eyes.
He says,
"You're not going to believe this."
With a smile, I say,
"Try me."
He sets the books down.
It's open to the poem 'Little Boy Blue' by Eugene Field.
I glance at the page,
then look up at him.
He says,
"Way back,
when I was in a one-room school house,
my

Arianna's Quest

           Is calling me onward.
I don't know what it means now,
Or where I'll have to go.
I don't know if I'll come back alive
         But I don't think I will,
All for the sake of the happiness
Of one who wished me ill.

why do you want to see me drunk?
         i don't understand

        there's a reason i'm

An Artist Like Me
Everywhere there's people dying,
Everywhere there're children crying;
Suffering as far as I can see,
So there's no reason to expect a break
For an artist like me.
So many are drowning in debt,
Downing shots so they can forget
And trying to numb the misery;
So there's no reason to expect a break
For an artist like me.
Popping pills and trying to cope,
Realizing there isn't much hope
For any kind of recovery;
So there's no reason to expect a break
For an artist like me.
The bickering it never ends:
Pointing fingers, then making friends;
Got to laugh at the hypocrisy.
So there's no reason to expect a break
For an artist like me.
I don't see bombs or tanks, oh no,
This is the death that takes you slow:
Despair from which you can't struggle free;
So there's no reason to expect a break
For an artist like me.
Hard to fight when you're being crushed,
When every day feels like too much;
All your paths lead to futility,
But part of me keeps hoping for a break
For an artist like me.

Ascend
This body,
against the rage of strongest winds
and waves of virulent assaults
will endure.
My feet,
through vicious aftershocks
shall grow roots
and when the eye of the storm
has looked me in the eye, I
will be left standing,
alone, intact,
whole.
My life is not my
own and this body,
is only worn.
I am
my spirit, ethereal
incorporeal
absolute.
Not by anything in this world
can I be touched,
you can not even bend me.
How can you destroy me?

Outside In
Look at the beauty
There is shit everywhere, every
breath drags it into me.
There is beauty all around
The ground under my feet is poisoned
I look up, and the sky is dying.
I see what you cannot
We avert our eyes, our
sighs we bottle up inside.
So much potential, so much
A shell of protection,
we’re so close to breaking apart.
You ignore your treasure,
this precious world, a shining
reflection of infinite possibilities—
you don’t deserve it
and you won’t miss
what you never noticed

Day in, die out
it’s all the same.
No one knows my name,
I’ve grown OK with that.
Life should make sense by now
instead, it drags me down.
A way in, that’s all I ask—
a path to your world, a
chance to taste neglected wonders

I wander through life,
everyone does—
it’s what we do when we don’t dream.
A seam to rip apart;
I’ll tear through you

Something has entered me
You may not make it

Depression...
No, depression is not just getting sad.
It's a constant sadness that melts into your bones,
An indescribably heavy weight upon your shoulders,
Never mind your heart and soul.
It's believing so many lies (maybe because you've learned to accept them)
And no longer appreciating your self-worth.
Wishing you no longer existed, wishing yourself gone.
Depression holds you back from your dreams
And pulls you into a nightmare.
It takes full control of your existence.
It makes you never want to get out of bed,
And when you finally do,
You just want to get back in it.
But you know the hardest part?
Ignorant people.
Just.
Like.
You.

I am a 2010 graduate of Penn State Mont Alto with a B.A. in English. I have been reading and writing stories and poetry my entire life, but I've only recently made serious progress towards completing a novel. My novels are almost always fantasy, but my poetry can range along many topics, though most are written to be quiet, sad, or introspective. Alas, I am an indifferent visual artist, so most of my drawings ans paintings are products of my art classes, not free time and inspiration.

Oh my.  Well.  Um... hi!  Yeah, it's... been a while.  Like, 2 years since I've written a journal on DeviantART.

I really haven't updated very much here.  The occasional poem, but I haven't really drawn anything in a long, long time.  I still do a bit of lurking on dA, but not as much as I used to.

I am still writing though.  Plugging away on my novel, uploading blog entries on The Cat's Cradle, and updating fan fiction (which you can read on www.fanfiction.net/~starsister… or on hikari-katana.deviantart.com)

Remember that depression I mentioned 2 years ago?  Yeah.  Still here.  Still not fixed.  Life is still crazy.  Maybe one of these days I'll be more active on dA again.

Until then, check out my blog at kvclements.com and/or follow me on Twitter @kvclements.

Till the next long overdue update...
